you are not always going to like or enjoy therapy
It is not uncommon for things to get worse before they improve; this is perfectly normal. Your therapist is there to support you in whatever is coming up for you.
-
you don't have to stick with the first therapist you choose.
A first session is not a lifelong commitment, so try not to put too much pressure on it to go perfectly. Give it a chance, but know you don’t have to stick with anything that does not suit you.
-
Think about your goals for therapy.
A good therapist will help you figure them out. From dealing with anxiety to wanting to find direction in life, everyone’s goals will be different. Remember there is no ‘right’ reason to go to therapy.
-
Consider keeping a journal.
Post-session, write a summary of what you covered, and what things were hard to talk about. What was helpful to remember and what did you learn? What did you forget to bring up, and what would you like to come back to next time?
-
Expect to talk about your history.
Each of our childhoods, wherever they sit on the scale between traumatic or benign, shape us into the beautifully complex beings we find ourselves to be in adulthood. Expect to do some delving; it’s how and where we gain an understanding of what is going on for us today.
-
please ask questions.
The most important thing is that your therapist is able to describe their process without ‘therapists’ speak’ and in a way you can understand. If you feel confused at any time, ask for clarification.
